Start Early.
Nothing is worse than rushing to pack at the last minute. Even if you are only packing 1 box each day at the beginning, this can really pay off in the end. Pack all of the items that you don’t use on a regular basis first, that way you aren’t scrambling to find your everyday items.
Gather the Troops and Supplies.
Call up everyone you can to help you pack, move, and unpack. Entice your friends and family with a BBQ, or something along those lines. Also, invest a little bit of money in good quality moving supplies. Boxes can be found at your local UPS store, storage shops, etc. You can even check on Classified Ads sites such as Craigslist to find free moving boxes. Be sure to pick up packing peanuts and paper, as this small expense is worth the cost if you can prevent your expensive collectables from breaking. Use socks, scarfs, and other small clothing items to wrap some of your possessions. This will protect your glassware while packing away more of your stuff!
Use the Labeling and ABC System.
On every box, make sure to label which room the items are associated with. NEVER mix objects from different rooms in the same box. This will ensure an organized move and will avoid confusion when unpacking. Even more, label each of your boxes either “A” (high priority), “B” (medium priority), or “C” (low priority). When you are at your new home and get to unpacking, this extra effort will allow you to unpack your most used things first and save your less pressing items for a later date.
Leave Behind Clutter.
On the note of ‘less pressing items’… get rid of all that clutter! Avoid moving anything you don’t need. It is costly, time-consuming, and mentally draining to pack away all of your things from 1989. Dispose of broken or torn items, and donate those in good condition to a local charity. Better yet, hold a garage sale to make some money to pay for your moving expenses.
Lighten Up.
Mix and match heavy and light items to keep the loads as light as possible. Boxes can be managed easier if they are kept under 50 lbs.
Make an Overnight Survival Pack.
Keep a bag full of overnight gear such as a days worth of clothing, toiletries, a blanket, pen & paper, bottled water, non-perishable food, paper plates, and plastic utensils. To kill the time while you are on the road, leave out a few small games or magazines for whoever is not driving.
